What is Pilates?
“Pilates” today is challenging to define due to various chain organizations, inconsistencies with training programs & changes in Pilates equipment. Taking away from how Pilates exercises were originally done. Rather than first getting into what is Pilates, we should initially define who Pilates is. This article from Sports Illustrated provides some insight on who the man, Joseph Pilates is and the exercises (originally called Contrology) he created.
Romana’s Pilates
The lineage of Pilates is important because as Joseph Pilates created exercises that worked and benefited people, it was imperative to maintain that standard to keep the work alive, & carry over those benefits from generation to generation. Romana Kryzanowska was a true protégé of Joseph Pilates and sought out to maintain and preserve the work of Pilates in its original form. From her, Romana’s Pilates International, a teacher training program was found. Michael Levy (level 2 teacher trainer), who worked closely with Romana assisting in seminars, workshops, & teaching other students originally made the move out to California where he established a training program. Trish Garland (level 2 teacher trainer) was a student of Romana, and for over 30 years has run her own training studio in Los Angeles, California. I was fortunate to study under Trish while going through the Romana’s Pilates International Instructor Training Program (ITP) in 2018 at her studio.
As Romana’s Pilates Instructors we do our very best to uphold the principles of the Pilates method, knowing it has benefited our lives and bodies, and teaching those who wish to learn as well.
